We've Been at the Tapestry Studio Since the 90s

Such an intriguing exhibition about a unique community. I am angry with myself that I hadn’t known about the Tapestry studio sooner; all the artists there are incredibly talented at blending traditional carpet weaving with bold, contemporary art innovations. They are affiliated with MSGSÜ’s Department of Painting, and are open to pedagogical teachings to everyone who is interested. Their approach is “learning together” which is an amazing method to bring together students, artists, academics and workers.

The Tapestry Studio was established in 1976-77 as a practice studio under the direction of painter and academic Zekai Ormancı (1949-2008), with the initiative and encouragement of painter and academic Özdemir Altan. It was always described as the “laid-back studio” and even taken lightly due to the traditional connotations of its name.
