If an artist isn’t present in the process of creating art can we call him/her an artist ?
Nowadays, or should I say in the past decades ? Some artists have stopped crafting their own works of art.
Is this related to contemporary art or the outcomes of life we currently live in?
—Probably is!
They are merely the originators of the idea—artists like Tony Cragg, Anish Kapoor, Damien Hirst, Ai Weiwei, Sol LeWitt, and Jeff Koons. They conceive the initial concept, which is later translated onto paper as sketches. However, when it comes to transforming that idea into physical existence, they rely on professionals—or already have entire teams working in their studios to assist them. Once the artwork is completed and displayed to the public, it is the artist who receives all the applause and recognition. But what about the true laborers of the piece? The ones behind the scenes, never acknowledged, never seen.
Something I have encountered is that when watching studio tour videos of prominent artists, you get a glimpse of these other artisans while the artist continues to mention the characteristics of the works of art “he” created. There is always an “I” in this and never suggesting a corporation or group work. They don’t admit that they get help or any kind of support to create that particular work of art. We know that without the help of the artisans in that studio, that idea wouldn’t make it to life.
I believe that artists who rely on external support beyond their own ability, talent, and artistic sensibility should begin acknowledging and crediting the true talents working behind the scenes. I don’t think Michelangelo needed anyone else’s skill to sculpt the Pietà, nor did Caravaggio depend on another’s hand to achieve that dramatic chiaroscuro effect on canvas.
It is crucial that, to be considered a true artist, one must be present in the creation of their art—not merely in a supervisory role, directing or correcting others, but actively participating in the entire journey. If you stop after generating an idea and producing a sketch, you remain an artist in name only—not a craftsman, sculptor, or painter in the fullest sense.
Don’t get me wrong, I have a huge respect for these artist because coming up with an idea especially in an art context is a huge deal. If everybody could come up with ideas everybody would become an artist. Since not everyone can do that, it is important to make the first steps towards a notion and this is the work of an artist. Generating ideas beyond the surface, material and manual labor is what makes them a mastermind.
I might say it’s like coming up with a food recipe, the point is the know which spices and tastes go together, act of mixing up different ingredients so that, at the end creating something amazing. After that every one can imitate what you have accomplished.
Of course, it would be foolish of me to even think artist who do not perform the act of producing the work are not capable of doing it ever so, they certainly are!
These people are well educated and talented perhaps one of a kind human beings with perspective that shaped and converted the art world. They just choose not to!
Thank you!
